When the The Planet of Cyclones was created, seven monstrous powers were created on its surface. Each of these powers is a unique creature, with no parents, mate, or offspring.
Over the millennium since the world’s creation, travelers have discovered the locations of most of these monsters’ lairs. The lairs are now littered with the bones of travelers who were too slow to flee, and would-be heroes who thought they had a chance against the powers.
The Northern Powers
Four monstrous powers made their lairs in the civilization-rich northern lands. These four would lurk for years unseen, then one would travel great distances to attack a settlement.
The attacks on settlements were always bloody. Victims could only hope that the beast would leave survivors, and perhaps some standing buildings.
Over the centuries, certain people have taken up worship of these powers. These faithful hoped that the monsters would not attack those who prayed to them. The organized religions of the humans have perpetuated and spread this practice. Today, praying to monstrous powers is as accepted as praying to deities.
Scholars have documented each of these four powers as having slain near a thousand people.
Dragon
She was called “Cobim Treasurepearls the Ivory Fires”, and was a fire-breathing lizard the size of a sperm whale. She made her lair in the Prairies of Daubing, near the heart of the human civilization known as the Vigorous Confederacy. She was last seen in 1049, grievously wounding a dwarven ranger who travelled too close to her lair. She left the ranger alive to tell the tale.
Bronze Colossus
It was called “Thudu Whipcourage the Spike of Sculptures”. It, like the Dragon, made its lair in the Prairies of Daubing. When not on a rampage, it stands, statue-like, in a remote shrine. It is not as large as the Dragon, but is about the size of four elephants. It is made of bronze, and even dwarven steel weapons can only cause minor dents and chips.
It was last seen in 1048. Tikbo, a dwarven hero who had personally slain a horned horror and a gloom troll, confronted the Bronze Colossus. She was struck down.
Hydra
He was called “Judgespurts the Lice of Growth”. The Hydra’s lair was never found, but was believed to be somewhere in the Swamp of Incidents. The hydra was barely larger than an elephant, but with seven toothy maws it could slay many at a time.
The Hydra was the first of the monstrous powers to die. It happened in 911 during his attack on Silveryfatal, a small dwarven community in the Oceanic Attic. Many died in that attack, but finally a dwarf was seen delivering a fatal wound to the Hydra. The dwarf’s name has been lost to history.
Roc
He was called “Takru Skinsearched the Flax of Persuasion”. The Roc nested in the peaks of The Spine of Diminishing, near the mountainhome of the Granite Abbey.
The Roc was as large as the Bronze Colossus. Its attacks would often end with it snatching some prize and carrying it off to its nest. That nest is now lined with over a thousand years of treasures from all civilizations.
It was last seen in the autumn of 1054, as described elsewhere.
The Three Titans
South of the civilized lands lays the equatorial jungle. The jungle, and points farther south, were home to monsters and ruins. The goblins from the far south — The Flighty Hex — have a few scattered strongholds in that jungle, but they are only islands in a sea of terrors.
We only have a rough understanding of what these creatures can do. We know they have shrines, like the Bronze Colossus. Unlike the northern powers, they do not travel to distant lands.
Jungle Titan
Called “Lebeyu Skunkwaved the Tufted Fish of Growths.”
A towering blob composed of mud. It has wings and it has an austere look about it. Beware its deadly spittle!
In the early days of the world, elves tried to start a nation in the steaming jungle. The spot they chose was near the Jungle Titan’s shrine. The jungle titan destroyed many of their people and works, then left. The night creatures and monsters of the jungle, seeing the elves’ weakened state, entered what was left of the settlements and completed the destruction of that people.
The Jungle Titan still watches the ruins of that failed nation.
Hill Titan
Called “Lam Pearspring the Nut of Owls.”
A huge one-eyed lizard. It has thin wings of stretched skin and it has a regal bearing. Its ecru scales are large and close-set. Beware its deadly spittle!
This monster’s shrine is in remote coastal hills. It has not engaged in slaughter on the same scale as the Jungle Titan, but it has proved deadly to any explorers who wander too deep into the hills.
In the last quarter century, a couple fools have attempted to slay the Hill Titan. One of them was Ngom the goblin. Ngom had previously ambushed the Bronze Colossus, and barely managed to escape with his life. In 1043, his ambush of the hill titan was only more successful in that he escaped without serious injury. A year later, Ngom’s unsuccessful monster-hunting career was ended by a giant.
Forest Titan
Called “Thelire Jumpwaxed the Hoary Fells.”
A huge eyeless oriole. It has a twisting, jointed trunk and it has a regal bearing. Beware its webs!
This titan’s shrine is the most isolated. It is on an island far to the southwest.
In 1047, this titan was seen for the first time in a century and a half. A dwarven wanderer, emboldened by her defeat of two gloom trolls and a giant dingo, attempted to hunt the Forest Titan. She did not survive the encounter.
